THE proposed 26.7 percent tariff increase by the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) will extremely affect City Hall as well as Georgetown itself, says Mayor Hamilton Green. According to Green, speaking at a press conference at City Hall, Georgetown, yesterday morning, the increase poses a threat to the street lights in the city as well as the lights and electricity at City Hall.
The mayor noted that as a result of this the city will suffer even more tremendously as City Hall already has a huge, outstanding balance for GPL.
Therefore, councillors will be meeting with senior officials at GPL today to discuss and negotiate this situation, Green disclosed.
He said the councillors who will meet with the senior officials at GPL will be involved in a serious discussion regarding the electricity in the city.
Green noted that Georgetown cannot afford to have its street lights cut off because of their importance at nights.
He explained that these lights serve as a safety measure for persons who are in the city in the night and he is hopeful that GPL and the council will come to a reasonable decision on this issue.
