In response to complaints… : Home Affairs promises relief soon from noise nuisance

THE Ministry of Home Affairs said yesterday that in response to numerous complaints about noise nuisance, against White Castle Fish Shop and Seeta’s Bar, residents will, soon, experience a relief because the authorities have been notified and would act. People living in close proximity of Seeta’s Bar in Station Street, Kitty and White Castle Fish Shop, on Hadfield Street, Werk-en-Rust, respectively, both in Georgetown, have filed countless reports and the Ministry took note, a release said.
It said the Ministry denounces, in the strongest terms, the great discomfort and inconvenience experienced by residents as a result of the loud, continuous and repetitive playing of music at those locations, as well as the accompanying disorderly behaviour of patrons and the indiscriminate parking of vehicles.
The release assured residents that both the Acting Commissioner of Police and the Chief Fire Officer were approached and have been given specific instructions with regard to the handling of this matter, in the interest of law and order.
It is anticipated that residents will experience some relief, shortly, the statement added.
The Ministry, last May 29, noted the upsurge in complaints of noise nuisance by people in various parts of the country.

Corrective action
The press statement gave the assurance that residents who take the initiative to report the loud, continuous and repetitive playing of music, to the Ministry, that all reports are forwarded to the Acting Commissioner of Police and copied to the respective Divisional Commanders with a directive that corrective action be taken in keeping with the Laws of Guyana.

It gave the assurance to citizens who make such reports that they are treated with the utmost importance and urgency.
The Ministry said it abhors the discomfort experienced by citizens due to the loud, continuous and repetitive playing of music by offenders and pointed out that it is the responsibility of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) to enforce the law against noise nuisance, particularly when reports are made at Police Stations.
The statement said citizens should recall that, a few years ago, the Ministry launched a ‘name and shame’ campaign against perpetrators of noise nuisance across the country and commenced publishing the locations from where the loud, continuous and repetitive music and other noises emanate.
The Ministry further assured citizens that every effort is made by it to impress upon the Police the need to take firm action on this public nuisance and urged them to continue lodging reports at the nearest Police Station or Divisional Headquarters, which are expected to deal with them.
The Ministry said it remains ready to lend support to citizens being affected by noise nuisance and reminded that reports may be submitted in writing to Lot 6 Brickdam, Stabroek, Georgetown; via hotline numbers 227-5214 or 227-5219; text messages to 623-6068 or 623-6072; e-mails to crimestoppersgy@yahoo.com; crimestoppersgy@hotmail.com; crimestoppersgy@gmail.com; visits to the Ministry or on the Minister’s live call-in radio programme every Wednesday at 21:00 hrs.
It is important that reports include specific details, such as names and addresses, which will be helpful to the Police in carrying out their investigations, said the advisory.
