HOURS after competing in this year’s edition of the National Sports Council’s Independence three-stage cycle road race in which he placed a creditable fourth, Roraima Bikers Club’s (RBC) Alonzo Greaves left these shores for a one-month training stint in the United States of America (USA). As this venture draws to a close, Greaves, who is making maximum use of his remaining time, left his mark in the country when he copped a first-place finish, doing so in the Historic Riverton Criterium (Pro 1-2-3) event last Saturday.
This followed the 23-year-old RBC ace cyclist’s top podium spot last weekend, when he carted off the WS United Category One race, ensuring his journey back to Guyana this weekend will be one filled with smiles and confidence.
His back-to-back top podium finishes, followed a second-place finish in the Connecticut Criterium (Pro 1-2-3) event last Friday, while he expressed confidence as he heads into the Guyana Cycling Federation’s (GCF) National Championships, scheduled for later this month.
In all three races of his podium finishes, over 40 cyclists started and apart from the top podium spots, Greaves copped fourth in the CRCA Open Category 1-3; 12th in the Floyd Bennette Category 1-3; 18th in the Bound Brook Criterium Pro-1 and 52nd in the Tour of Somerville Category Pro-1, his first race in the country.
According to president of RBC, Brian Allen, Greaves copped another first place finish last Tuesday night, taking that number to three.
Greaves’ trip, which was saw him leave Guyana during an impressive local season, in which he copped eight first places prior to the three-tage event, was made possible with support from Digicel, Bounty Farm, Spads Inc., Toucan Industries, Kevin Jeffrey and family, Café Sol, Compton Persaud, Roraima Bikers Club, Linden Dowridge and George Humphrey.
