THE New Amsterdam Lions Club, continuing to reach out to those in need, on Monday, donated $20,000 cash to Jeff Christie.
The man had recently made a plea, in this newspaper, for assistance to replace some of the things he lost when his house was gutted by a June 1 fire in Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice. Handing over the donation, on its behalf in Vryman’s Erven, New Amsterdam, Club President Samuel Singh offered words of comfort to Christie who is yet to find a proper place to dwell.
“I hope that our little contribution will make your life a bit easier. We know that, in these times of disaster, you may want to give up hope but we are encouraging you to keep striving.
“All is not lost, you will recover someday,” Singh encouraged the beneficiary.
Christie was grateful for the help and promised to keep working towards recovering his losses.
“I am very much grateful for this assistance. This is my first step towards rebuilding and I will continue to work towards providing for my family who are still in shock,” he acknowledged.
The June 1 conflagration, which originated from the Jokwesan’s Creole Restaurant, completely destroyed the business along with Christie’s house and severely damaged the home of Deslyn Althea Paddy, at Lots 7-14 and 7-15, Charlotte Street, New Amsterdam. (Michael Khan)
