Doctor reports… : Malaria under control in Mazaruni after outreach

THE Vector Control Services of the Ministry of Health, recently, concluded a malaria outreach in the Mazaruni sub-district of Region 7.
Head of the Department, Dr. Reyaud Rahaman reported that it was very effective. He said the objective was to reduce transmission of the disease for which the Region needs help because of the number of dredges, especially the water types, present there.
Some of the communities visited by the team included Kamarang, Waramadong and Purima and their surrounding environs.
Rahaman said the tasks carried out in the areas targeted were – conducting mass blood smears, administering treatment, establishing/reviving school health clubs, spraying indoor and outdoor facilities and distributing the long lasting treated bed nets.
The doctor said malaria is under control in Region 7 but there is a long way to go in general.
The Vector Control Department has taken an aggressive approach in tackling the spread of the ailment which has, lately, been on the increase in Guyana, especially in the hinterland parts of the country.
As such, the Ministry of Health put malaria on the front burner so as to bring the number of cases under control. (Gabreila Patram)
