History, it is said, repeats itself. One may recall, last years callous statements made in the aftermath of the of the slashing of the 2012 budget, of A Party For National Unity’s(APNU’S) finance spokesperson, Carl Greenidge, coldly saying that he has no apologies to make for the combined opposition’s actions that for a period placed the economic livelihood of almost 300 public servants on the line. Then there was the Alliance For Change’s(AFC) Khemraj Ramjattan, who spoke of collateral damage, meaning the public servants who were eventually made to experience great deprivations in the wait for a court’s decision that deemed the cuts illegal. It does not take a trained economic to know what downsizing of a national budget means for any economy. It means the withdrawal of funding for specific programmes, which means either the temporary or permanent halt to the planned initiatives.
But it does appear that both Ramjattan and APNU’s Granger are either plain ignorant of basic economics, which they are not; or, are simply insulting the intelligence of the Guyanese nation.
In a further repeat of especially the latter attribute, Granger, in a Stabroek News piece, in which he claimed that “government is proceeding as though nothing has happened , opining further that ”No impact seen yet from Budget cuts”. Ramjattan echoes the view: “Pressure building”, from the same SN story.
How heartless are these two politicians! They must be informed, first and foremost, that because of their vindictive line against GINA, that entity’s staff has not received their salaries. If both these persons had any care for those workers which they profess ever so often during their 2011 election campaign, such reckless action would not have been, given the expected hardships that would be expected.
Add the proposed GPL tariff hike of 26.7%, recommended as from May, compliments of the cut of the $5B subsidy from the government, and one will understand the grave implications that such hold for the Guyanese consumers.
How can the AFC’s leader now incite civil unrest in response to GPL’s proposed hike, when it is the combined anti-national action of his AFC and Granger’s APNU, that would have influenced such a decision?
One can continue with the other projects that have been denied funding by the unconscionable opposition two-some.
How crazy-brained, blinkered, and irresponsible some of our national leaders are!
