I am a strong supporter of table tennis throughout our country. However, I was saddened as I watched the Evening News (Saturday, June 1, 2013) sports whereby many youngsters were awarded prizes and trophies for their outstanding performances in the “Independence Day Competition”- but to my amazement, there were no Berbicians—correct me if I am wrong.
The Sports Minister and the Guyana Table Tennis Association President were high in praise for all the participants and both had encouraging remarks—some 30 schools were represented. Where were the schools from Berbice?
My son was called to “trials” earlier this year for a place in the under- 15 team. He did not make it for several reasons: lack of preparation; not being able to afford a coach; and his racquet was worn out. During the speeches made by the Sports Minister and the GTTA President, nothing was mentioned about plans for the game in Berbice. The ‘few’ young players will continue to suffer in Berbice because there is no proper coaching programme being put in place, and most of them, like my son, cannot afford to buy a proper racquet.
Our last major competition was in November 2012 and it was sponsored by an overseas-based Guyanese. How are these players, who performed so well back then, feeling at present? Understandably, some of these youngsters have to prepare for exams and some also for CXC, but for the the coming summer, what are the plans for table tennis in Berbice?
I feel sorry for the few young players at present who are residing in the Berbice area, some are keen to make it to the top—but will they be given a fair chance to do so, or will they do what a few others have done and turn to other sports? It is left to be seen.
