LAST Tuesday evening the Theatre Guild staged the musical “The Lion King”, and little Nakisha Narine of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara acted the part of Samba.
Her performance drew the following comment from social activist Frederick Kissoon in his Kaieteur News’ column of Thursday June 6: “I don’t want to be harsh on Nakisha Narine who played young Simba, but my advice would be to work on voice modulation if she is going to continue in drama.”
In an interview with the Guyana Chronicle on Saturday, Nakisha Narine’s grandfather said that Kissoon should not have made that comment because Nakisha and the other children worked very hard to produce the musical, and he saw nothing wrong with the play that night; and he was sure that the audience enjoyed it very much.
Nakisha’s grandfather made the point that if Kissoon had a grandchild he would not want any one saying such things about his grandchild, so he should not seek to disparage other people’s grandchildren.
Noting that his granddaughter wondered why “this man” would say such things, and also mention her name in the article, the upset grandfather said: “If he wanted to make a point about the play, he shouldn’t have used names, especially the names of children.”
The grandfather is hoping that Kissoon will issue an apology to his granddaughter.
