DDL finance manager killed in early morning road accident

THE business community was plunged into mourning yesterday morning with the news that a senior manager of one of Guyana’s leading beverage company was killed in a road accident.

altFifty-seven year old Harry B Singh was struck dead on Sheriff Street while attempting to cross the road early Sunday morning. Singh has been identified as the finance manager of the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL).
This publication was told that the man late on Saturday night visited the Francine Fish Shop on Sheriff Street where he was talking with the proprietrix for several minutes before leaving for home.
The man lives on Garnett Street just a stone’s throw away from where the accident occurred. According to information as the man wrapped up his conversation with the Fish Shop owner and was attempting to cross the road, a grey Toyota CRV came out of nowhere and hit the man down killing him on the spot.
One family member of the now dead man explained that the driver of the car is claiming that the man was drunk and was staggering across the road when he ended up in the path of the vehicle.
However, family members are not buying that story since according to them there was never any indication on the part of the Fish Shop owner to suggest that the man was drunk when he left for home.
The vehicle registration number has been recorded as PJJ 6094 and is said to be owned by a resident in the city.
The death of Mr. Singh comes just a few weeks after he presented the accounts of the company to the company management which was then released to the board and subsequently to shareholders.
Yesterday when this publication visited the man’s home it was shut tight with only his car in the driveway. The man is married and has three children who are all adults and reside abroad.
He lives with his wife, but at the time of the accident she was abroad and it is understood that she is likely to be travelling to Guyana today.
One relative said that they got the news from a street dweller who informed them of the tragic news.
Another relative said that the driver of the vehicle was attempting to tell the police that the senior company executive was drunk at the time of the accident.
Over at the Kitty Police Station where the vehicle was impounded, there was some visible damage to the left side of the vehicle.
