POLICE at Linden have arrested at least one person for questioning following a daylight robbery at the Wismar Post Office in Silvertown, Wismar, some 200 metres away from the Wismar Police Station.
Shock and disbelief were on the faces on those Old Age and National Insurance Scheme pensioners who were at the time waiting to encash their cheques when two men, reportedly armed with hand guns burst into the post office.
They overpowered a police rank on guard and moved to the vault where they grabbed an undisclosed sum of money and fled.
Most of the elderly persons who were at the scene were at first unaware that a robbery had been carried out, since the men were not wearing masks and showed little regard to hiding their identity.
Postmistress Ramona Singh and another employee were attending to the pensioners when the robbery occurred. After taking away the firearm of the lone police rank, the men broke open a window and moved to the cashier where they demanded by force that the vault be opened.
The robbery occurred just after 08:00hrs when the other post office staff members were already on the road making their normal deliveries and rounds in the community.
This is the third such robbery committed at the post office at Wismar.
Investigations are continuing.
