Triumph fire destroys two-storey building, leaves seven homeless

Seven persons have been rendered homeless after a fire last evening gutted the two-storey building occupied by Sarah London at Lot 30 Surat Drive, Triumph village, East Coast Demerara.

altInformation reaching the Guyana Chronicle is that the fire started shortly after 20:00 hours, after power had been restored to the area for a second time and the service line connected to the building began sparking.
Onel Profitt, an occupant of the ill-fated house, said she had left the home to take one of her cousins to get her hair plaited, and on returning, she saw her home on fire. Her sister Sarah and a brother had been at home with the children when electrical power was restored, and after the service line began sparking, a loud popping noise was heard and the building became engulfed in flames.alt
Worshipers at the nearby Triumph Assembles of God Church were forced to evacuate the premises, but managed to save musical and other equipment from the church, and removed pews and other valuables from the threatened building.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) arrived on scene to meet a crowd gathered observing the fire destroying the building, and three fire tenders were pressed into action to try and contain the fire, which by then had almost totally destroyed the building.
Both storeys of the building had been fully furnished, and losses are still being calculated.
