First Lady charms, fetes Region 3 children –to mark International Children’s Day

GUYANA’S First Lady, Madam Deolatchmee Ramotar, yesterday visited and interacted with the children of Region Three (West Demerara/East Bank E/bo) at the Uitvlugt/Leonora Community Centre on the occasion of International Children’s Day 2013.

altOrganised by the First Lady Foundation in collaboration with the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), the event saw children from all walks of life gathering at one venue to celebrate a day dedicated to them.
The smiling faces of children told the First Lady they were happy for her visit, and they expressed their love for her in dance, song and poetry.alt
In addressing the children, Mrs. Ramotar urged them to take their education seriously, in order to secure a good job and live a happy life. She also encouraged them to be obedient to their teachers, who are preparing them to be adults, and later, the ones to take over administration of the country.
International Children’s Day is celebrated worldwide on June 1 of each year. It was first proclaimed by the World Conference for the Wellbeing of Children in 1925, and is not to be confused with altUniversal Children’s Day, which is celebrated on November 20th.

This day is usually marked with speeches on children’s rights and wellbeing, and other events involving or dedicated to children.
