Policing needs prompt, proactive and assertive action

IN a previous letter, I had bemoaned the lethargy exhibited by the police when it comes to investigating serious crimes. But for the tardy and unprofessional way they go about things, many seemingly difficult crimes would have been solved.

When I say this I mean all crimes should be treated with the professionalism it deserves, that is, prompt, decisive action whenever the situation arises.
This modern approach will prove two things. First, most crimes will be solved and second, it will send a clear cut message to criminals and would-be criminals that you will be caught. In this way you would have disturbed the criminals’ nesting hole bringing a total upset in all their plans.  This is the message law enforcement should be sending across to the criminal fraternity. With this framework in place, crime will come to an all-time low.

It has now been proven that the spent shells found at the scene of the Romain Cleto shooting came from the same weapon that was used in the shooting death of Jason Wills in Meadow Brook. This tells anyone with even half a brain that the gunman or gunmen is/are operating from a location in or around the urban centre. Their home base more than likely is not very far from the scene of the shooting.
Make no mistake, criminals are not random operators, they are good planners who plan their nefarious activities operating from a home base. They commit the crime then hurriedly run for cover to conceal themselves as well as their weapons. With this information at their fingertips, the police should have by now strategically dissected the criminal wards of Georgetown and should have gotten those guys a long time ago. But as I said earlier, a laid back police force will not get anything done.
Policing in today’s world needs prompt, proactive and assertive action, only then would we be anywhere close to solving these seemingly endless gun crimes and make Guyana a safer place to live in.
