One fined for marijuana in phone, other remanded

NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD labourer Julian Anthony (no address given) was fined for possession of a narcotic yesterday.

He appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman and admitted that, on Sunday, May 26, at Leguan Island, Essequibo River, he had one gramme of cannabis sativa (marijuana).
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, told the court that ranks were on patrol when they stopped and searched the defendant and found leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant in a phone in one of his pockets.
The prosecutor said the defendant informed the police that the substance was given to him by Derrick Ambrose.
Anthony explained that he was at a sports bar and had gone to the toilet where he discovered the phone. Suspecting that it belonged to Ambrose, since he went in there just before him, the defendant said he decided to take the instrument to the owner and at the same time police conducted the search and found the phone on him.
Meantime, Ambrose (no address given either) pleaded not guilty to the same drug offence and was remanded to prison until June 17.
