PRESIDENT Donald Ramotar and a team of officials from the Agriculture Ministry Sunday visited several agricultural areas in Region 3 to ensure that all measures are in place during the current rainy season.
President Ramotar explained that the visit was to ensure that the outfall and drainage channels and pumps are in working order. “The rainy season is always a hectic time for us in Guyana,” he said, and during this period, the Government usually closely monitors various communities, especially those prone to flooding to ensure all measures are taken to mitigate the effects of the rainfall.
The visit took in Stanleytown and Canal No. 2 on the West Bank, Demerara, a look at the Boerasirie Conservancy, and Windsor Forest on the West Coast Demerara.
Head of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, Lionel Wordsworth, who accompanied the President, stated that several interventions have been taken. In the Canals Polder, equipment is on site and pumps are in operation, he said.
Wordsworth said that at Windsor Forest, one agricultural area is under stress because of the rainfall, and some lands have been affected, and this is being addressed.
Communities, especially the vulnerable ones, are being closely monitored during this May/June rainy season.
