KINGSTON, Jamaica, (CMC)-Stringent safety and security measures are being introduced for Jamaica’s crucial world cup qualifiers against Mexico and the United States on June 4 and 7 in Kingston.
They include arresting and charging scalpers and persons selling tickets outside the national stadium, increased security features on tickets and easier access to the stadium and bleachers.
Public access to bleachers opposite the main grand stand at the national stadium has been restricted to accommodate television broadcast crew from the USA and Mexico.
“The JCF is fully aware of the security demands relating to this match,”said SSP Assan Thompson of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
“We are also cognisant of the implications for the staging of other matches, as also the entire football programme”.
Police officers are being used with ushers to direct patrons to their seats based on ticket numbers and will remove people found in seats not matching their ticket numbers, officials have said.
The measures also include changes in the flow of traffic to avoid congestion around the stadium.
The world’s governing body for football, FIFA, had reprimanded Jamaica after fans invaded the field following the Reggae Boyz historic win over the United States in a World Cup qualifier in Kingston late last year.
FIFA had also threatened to penalise the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) if there is a repeat of the incident at the National Stadium.
