ACTING Town Clerk, Carol Sooba was yesterday officially given the Preliminary Assessment Report for the Restoration of City Hall project by acting City Engineer, Lloyd Alleyne at a media briefing yesterday at City Hall Georgetown.
Before being handed the report, the Town Clerk said that she was uncertain of how critical the project would be for her.
She said she would try by all organised legal means to deal with the preliminary works involved in restoring the City Hall building.
According to Sooba, the Preliminary Assessment Report which was prepared by the two foreign consultants was handed over to the City Engineer by the Mayor yesterday morning, and Deputy Town Clerk, Sharon Harry, who had attended the meeting when the report was presented in Sooba’s absence, was completely ignored by the Mayor, and was never given a copy of the report. This, Ms Sooba said, is a perfect example of the Mayor taking action to minimise the acting Town Clerk.
Sooba said she has not had opportunity to look at the report, as it was not in her possession, but she assured that she would do everything in her power to involve every possible agency to assist with this project.
Upon collecting the report from Alleyne, Sooba said that now that she is in possession of this very important piece of information, she would be able to read, assess, and make copies which would be sent to the relevant departments of City Hall, the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, and the National Trust Corporation, among other agencies, so her administration can move forward with the process of restoring City Hall.
The Town Clerk assured the general public that, under her watch, however long is her tenure as Town Clerk, she would tolerate no hindrance to the City Hall Restoration project.
She said that, as town clerk, she is in charge of overseeing the workings of the town, but had extended a hand of cooperation to the Mayor for his collaboration on this project.
She explained that in order to garner funds for the project, all transactions would be done transparently; as it is the only approach she had ever taken as Town Clerk and as legal officer of the council for the past 12 years.
She also said she would not embrace anything that would sully her name or those of the officers under her watch. She is therefore calling on the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown to change their attitude and withdraw whatever disparaging remark they may have made about her and to join her in working together to complete all relevant tasks.
She also said she is waiting on the Mayor to publically declare his cooperation to get City Hall restored.
Sooba said that one of the past town clerks had come up with the initiative to relocate certain departments to an empty space in the yard just next to the Mayor’s Department, which she said would have made the restoration of City Hall a bit easier, but Mayor Green had objected to having the building constructed at the side of his office. Consequently, the building has not been constructed.
