Sudden death of 12-year-old Essequibo student attributed to diabetes

SPECULATION about the sudden death of a 12-year-old student of the 8th of May Primary School ended after the post-mortem on Tuesday proved that the child died as a result of diabetes.

The death of Troy Ryan Livan, last Friday, sent shock waves across the villages of West Bury, Bounty Hall and Dartmouth in Essequibo and caused panic among students while villagers speculated on what might have caused his death after he took ill at school last Thursday afternoon.
Roxanne Livan, mother of the dead child, said her son was in good health and spirits when he left for school last Thursday morning. The mother related that her son returned home for lunch and ate his food normally and had water to drink before leaving for the afternoon session. She said when the session ended her son was brought home on a bicycle and was in pain.
The mother said she rushed out to the road to meet her son, asking him what was wrong. She enquired whether he had been in a fight and he said no but he could not see to walk. According to Livan, her son tried to walk to the yard but fell down and she then rushed him to the Charity Hospital for medical treatment. She said he was admitted and given saline and an injection and was quickly transferred to the Suddie Hospital by ambulance.
According to the mother, doctors admitted him and began to run tests on him but he got worse. However, the mother who remained at the hospital during the night was allowed to see him. She said she rubbed him up and called out his name.  According to the grieving mother she told him, “Mummy is here” and he responded and said, “Yes mummy.”

The mother said she then asked him if he wanted water and he said “No”, but she didn’t know that was the last word she would hear from her son.
Livan said her son was then taken to the ICU. The grieving mother said she got home after 01:00hrs and made preparations to travel to Georgetown with her only son but while travelling back to the Suddie Hospital at about 05:30hrs she was told via cell phone that her son will not be travelling to Georgetown because he had passed away at 05:15hrs.
The mother said she was shocked and could not understand how her healthy son died so quickly. The mother said her son was awaiting results of the Grade Six examinations.
Meanwhile, rumors were spreading that the child drank water from a tank at the West Bury Primary School and took ill. On Tuesday, a team from the Ministry of Education visited the school and the home of the deceased child. Family members are currently making preparations to bury the child.
