GOVERNMENT’S investment in the provision of access to healthcare is evident in the increasing construction and rehabilitation of healthcare facilities across the country, even in most of the remote areas.
On a recent visit to Region 1, Minister in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker, commissioned a new hut in the community of Barima-Koriabo. This investment of $6.7M by government would ensure the delivery of healthcare in a safe and controlled environment to the 420 residents of this community in the Barima-Waini region.
This new structure, which boasts a waiting area, a malaria room, an examination room and washrooms, replaced a smaller building that was constructed in 1998.
Barima-Koriabo is the second Amerindian community to benefit from a health hut recently, as government, in 2013, continues on its agenda of building on the gains made in the health sector under the PPP/C administration in the past 21 years.
On May 15, while on a visit to Region 8 (Potaro-Siparuni), Minister Whittaker commissioned a health hut for the village of Princeville. The facility was built at a cost of approximately $6.5M, and is equipped with a waiting area and malaria room. It also has a community health worker room, drug storage and wash rooms, and water storage facility.
In 21 years, the PPP/C government has transformed the access and delivery of health care in Guyana with the addition of new modern health facilities, trained staff and in the remote areas, at the least, access to primary healthcare.
