PRESIDENT of Alpha United and Presidential Adviser on Empowerment, Odinga Lumumba, was appointed by the General Council of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) to the position of General Secretary last weekend.
Lumumba replaced former General Secretary Christopher Matthias, who had to resign from the post after being elected president of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) early April and brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously served as president of the GFA.
In an invited comment, GFA president Vernon Burnett said it is important to have the General Secretary position filled, adding that he hopes Lumumba will “bring to the table what is mandated of the general secretary post.”
“I’m open-minded and would want to hope for the best,” Burnett stated adding he is not one to dwell on personality, but rather what the individual can offer to the position he or she is appointed or elected to serve.
Meanwhile, Burnett informed that he has asked Vice President in charge of Technical and Tactical Development, Rawle Adams, who early last month submitted his resignation after citing job commitments were hampering his ability to function as an executive, to rethink his position of retiring from the post, with his resignation set to take effect from June 1.
In an official letter to the media, Adams, said, “While it is the best time for football in Georgetown and Guyana, it is the worst time for my prolonged continued involvement at this level due to personal obligations that loom ahead.
It is my view that the demands of football and the developmental needs of the sport in Georgetown which fall directly under my purview would be compromised by my inability to dedicate the required time as same is being monopolised by way of my work commitments.”
