THE Environmental Assessment Board (EAB) has found, after closely examining all the issues brought by BK International and Bulkan Timber Works, that no Environmental Impact Assessment is required for BK International to operate a small scale sand mine at Yarrowkabra, Soesdyke, Linden Highway.
After the disrupted public hearing and the special meeting on the appeal by Bulkan Timber Works against BK International, the Environmental Assessment Board (EAB), in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act (1996), submitted its findings to the Environmental Protection Agency which has handed down its decision to the parties.
Following an appeal the EAB had proceeded with the public hearing which was disrupted by residents and workers of both parties during a heated exchange of words.
A special meeting was then summoned and the parties involved provided answers to specific questions which the EAB had required for their decision-making. This was done in an amicable environment and within seven working days the decision was forward to the EPA.
BK International Inc. was granted approximately 7.8 hectares (19 acres) by the Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC) and the EPA to operate a small scale sand mine.
This sand mine is intended to supply some of the major contracts where sand is needed at the CJIA Expansion, Timehri the road expansion for the East Bank four-lane project and the Haags Bosch landfill.
The appellant, Bulkan Timber Works, had cited a number of issues, including vibration to sensitive computerized equipment, and possible effects on neighbours.
However, efforts by Guyana Chronicle to obtain a comment from both parties proved futile.
