THE National Weather Watch Centre has announced that the second period of above normal high tides is expected to commence today.
It would last until May 30, with the highest anticipated on May 26, said a statement to the Guyana Chronicle, which indicated that waves and sea conditions would be rough, reaching heights of 2.8 to 3.3 metres in open waters.
The highest of these tides, scheduled for May 26, is projected to reach a height of 3.21 metres.
The Centre emphasised that there are possibilities of overtopping with the high tides and advised that all marine and low-lying areas should exercise extreme caution during this time.
Meanwhile, the Centre stated that, with the current trends in the El Nino/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) forecast models of neutral conditions, rainfall values during this time will be consistent, with the average of normal to above normal values.
It said the month of May is slated to be exceedingly wet (EeW), since it kicks off Guyana’s primary wet season.
“Rainfall values are expected between 300 mm to 500 mm over an average of 20 to 25 rain days. The expected weather conditions favour mainly cloudy and occasional overcast skies with showers and intermittent rainfall. Occasional wind gusts can also be expected before and during showers,” the update said.
It said, from today through Friday, occasional cloudy spells with isolated showers are expected over some coastal and near inland areas.
The remainder of this period is expected to be cloudy and the Centre advised to expect occasional overcast skies with moderate to heavy showers and intermittent rainfall across the entire country.
