GECOM successfully concludes extended registration

THE Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) yesterday concluded its extended period of registration across Guyana. In an invited comment to the Guyana Chronicle, GECOM’s Public Relations Officer Vishnu Persaud indicated that all systems were in place to accommodate the last day rush, in any, in the registration period.

He explained that officers at all the centres across Guyana were equipped to handle any unusual situation had any arisen as the deadline got closer.

During the course of the day, this newspaper visited several centres in Georgetown and its environs, and found that many prospective registrants had either only just attained the age of majority, or did so after the cutoff date of the last round of registration.

Others who were out of their respective jurisdictions because of work or they were on vacation at the time of the previous registration deadline were also making themselves available yesterday for registration, while other prospective registrants were seeking re-registration after they had lost or had had stolen their National Identification Cards, or had had their names changed by marriage.
