Alleged coconut thief granted $90,000 bail

WELL-KNOWN community nomad, Charles Alexander, who regularly roams villages on the East Coast of Demerara for street lingering fruits, appeared before Cove and John Magistrate, Zamilla Alli on Wednesday, May 8, to answer the following charges: That on Monday, May 6, at Bee Zee, Enmore, he stole a quantity of coconuts valued at $5000., property of Chankaran Sooklall.

That on the same day he resisted being arrested by Rural Constable Leonard Narine; and that he assaulted Rural Constable, Leonard Narine on the same day.

A visibly confused Alexander told the court in his defence that he neither stole coconuts nor hit anyone on the day in question. The thirty-one-year-old added that he resides at his aunt’s resident at 184 Melanie Damishana, and has no reason to steal.

He was placed on a total $90,000 bail for the three offences, and the matter was adjourned to June 4 for report.
