REGION 2 APNU councillor, Mr. Wazir Latiff, has come out in support of the specialty hospital project while contending that the cutting of funds from the national budget for the project is not a spiteful act.
The councillor, speaking at the RDC meeting in Essequibo on Tuesday, argued that before a specialty hospital is built in Guyana, all regional hospitals and health centres should first be upgraded and put in top shape.
However, Region 2 Vice Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo, who chaired the meeting told the councillor that all government-run hospitals and health centres across the country are functioning well and are in top shape, providing free health care to all Guyanese.
The vice chairman pointed out that sometimes there are some hiccups at one or two hospitals, but that does not mean a specialty hospital is not needed in Guyana. Mr. Samaroo said that the specialty hospital that the Opposition is fighting against will benefit every Guyanese regardless of race or political connections.
The APNU councillor then quickly responded that he is supporting the specialty hospital project, but wants transparency in the awarding of the contract. Mr. Samaroo then noted that the contract was awarded by the National Tender Board.
