THE Global Environmental Facility (GEF) is, presently, completing GEF 5, which is part of its four-year cycle programme.
In that period, a total of $5.8M was disbursed to be spent on a sustainable energy project which targeted all ten Administrative Regions across the country.
This was disclosed by Head of the Policy and Coordination Planning Unit in the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Mr. Veetal Rajkumar.
He said the remaining $800,000 is being expended by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), aimed at biodiversity in the mining sector, especially in Regions 1 (Barima/Waini); 8 (Potaro/Siparuni); 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) and some parts of 10 (Upper Demerara/ Upper Berbice).
Rajkumar said the projects were approved by Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS) Dr. Roger Luncheon.
Rajkumar said, when GEF 5 is exhausted, the scheme will move to GEF 6 which includes development in Amerindian communities, to create employment and maintain and enhance ecosystems.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Guyana, among other agencies, launched the GEF Small Grants Programme on April 26, 2013.
It makes grants directly to civil society organisations, including community-based and non-governmental ones, to design and implement undertakings that will bring environmental and livelihood benefits to communities.
So far, the GEF Committee has been receiving proposals for various Amerindian communities countrywide and projects are being reviewed for approval.
The overall goal is to contribute to maintaining and enhancing of ecosystems, health, integrity, stability and functions by strengthening the enabling environment.
Rajkumar stated, further, that as projects are being approved, the general public will be made aware of them.
