GDF dismisses lieutenant indicted over raid on gold mining camp

LIEUTENANT Madainey Humphrey has been dismissed from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) following the conclusion of court martial proceedings against him regarding an alleged robbery attempt in the hinterland.

altThe lieutenant was implicated in an alleged robbery attempt at the Julian Ross Landing, Region 7, in January this year.
The GDF, upon investigating the matter, took the decision to court martial the lieutenant who was found to have disobeyed a lawful command, and to have been in breach of the Force’s Standing Orders, charges to which he pleaded guilty. His sentence of dismissal was unanimous, the GDF said in a press release yesterday.
The court martial proceedings concluded last Friday and Humphrey was represented by attorneys Bernard Da Silva and Beverly Bishop.
On April 22, Humphrey appeared before Chief Magistrate  Priya Sewnarine-Beharry to answer the charge of robbery under arms. Humphrey, 25, of Tuschen Housing Scheme and Lance Corporal Felix Frank, 28, of Melanie Damishana are accused of robbing Kelly Williams of three pennyweights of raw gold at Julian Ross Landing, Cuyuni, in January while they were armed with one AK-47 rifle.

The gold was the property of Almendo Da Silva. They were released on $300,000 bail each and the matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court. The prosecution did not object to bail.
Meanwhile, the GDF reiterated in its release that “it will not waiver in its complete intolerance for indiscipline and will continue to hold its members accountable for any diversion from its Standing Operation Procedures (SOP).”
On January 28, it was reported that soldiers went to  mining camps at Devil’s Hole, Cuyuni where they seized marijuana from some drug pushers and smoked it before descending  on the miners.

The group identified as soldiers demanded all the raw gold from the hapless miners, most of them Brazilians.
Subsequently, Chief of Staff Commodore Gary Best met with the miners, who identified the soldiers and an investigation followed.
