Crime Chief reports… No progress with probes into recent murders

CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud, yesterday, gave an update on Police investigations into several recent murders.

altIn relation to that of 89-year-old Millicent Cummings, he said all nine suspects who had been held were released after DNA samples were taken from three men.
Those specimens would be sent overseas for testing and that would take some time, Persaud stated.
However, the suspects, all from the same community, were let go pending further investigation.
Cummings’ bloodied and semi-nude body was found on April 12 under a house at Cove and John, East Coast Demerara.
The elderly woman had been bludgeoned and a post mortem performed by pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh found that the cause of her death was severe blunt trauma to the face.
With respect to the killing of 70-year-old Frederick Thomas, whose mutilated corpse was discovered on the stairway of Gaumont Hotel, in High Street, Georgetown, the probe has hit a snag.alt
The Deputy Commissioner (Crime) said the hotel owner and a female sex worker, who had been held and interrogated, were set free.
But Police are looking for a third suspect.
The dead Thomas had a stab wound to his chest when the discovery was made about 14:30 hrs on April 15.

NO MOTIVE
Initially, three women and two men were taken into custody but no motive for the crime was ascertained by the Police.
Persaud said the man who was in custody has been released and another suspect is being hunted for the murder of domino fanatic Orin Joseph, who was killed at his home/business place, Lot 1222 Gaulding Place, South Ruimveldt Park, also in the city, on April 14.
The jewels Joseph was wearing at the time were, allegedly, stolen from him by two men on a motorcycle, who, it is alleged, discharged a volley of bullets, one of which struck the victim in the abdomen.
Joseph, President of the Blue Bird Domino Club, had just left his yard and was about to drive his motor car back under his house when he was attacked by the gunmen who escaped during a blackout in the area.
The 52-year-old was killed about 23:40hrs just after a domino competition had ended.
The Crime Chief said the victim’s wife, Faye Joseph heard explosions and, when she went to enquire what had transpired, she saw her mortally wounded husband lying on the road.
