National Archives Data Base Project launched online

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Archives of Guyana, yesterday, launched the National Archives Data Base Project online at the National Archives building on Homestretch Avenue.

altThis project was launched to help preserve, disseminate, process, and access information for locals and the world through the worldwide use of the internet.
Digital documentary heritage is important for humanity as digital technology has become the primary means of knowledge creation and expression.
Electronic documents are being used constantly to record activities and the transaction will continue in the future.
Guyana’s heritage is represented in these digital formats being created. It was pointed out that government agencies need to manage the records they create and keep but because of lack of awareness or resources little has been done by most of these agencies.
If this situation was not remedied the Guyanese nation would have lost years of records that should have been preserved.
Present at the launch was Minister of Culture, Dr. Frank Anthony who highlighted the fact that there are several persons, especially those residing overseas, who want to know about their ancestry but to access the information was difficult.alt
He further stated that there is a lot of historic information available, so making it available on the internet was always on the ministry’s agenda, just awaiting the proper execution.
CEO of DEV Info –Tech, Mr. Robin Singh, who is responsible for the configuration of the website, said that the task the minister gave him was not an easy one and at one time it seemed impossible to complete. However, Singh expressed his pleasure at  being a part of such a wonderful project.
Meanwhile the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport also yesterday launched their new website giving persons direct access to the ministry through the internet.
The website has more options for persons visiting it and also a direct link to the National Archives Electronic Records.
