PRESIDENT of the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry [GCCI], Clinton Urling is calling on the relevant authorities to “review” the allocation criteria for radio licences and is urging a serious reassessment, though he is not advocating any revocation.
He was speaking yesterday after presenting the Attitudinal Survey for 2013 at the boardroom of the GCCI at Waterloo Street, Georgetown.
Urling said that publicly and from the GCCI point of view, it can be agreed that the entire process was not carried out in a very transparent manner.
He made it clear, however, that the GCCI does not wish to see the revocation of the licences that were issued by the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority.
The GCCI president asserted that a second look should be given to determine what was the criteria upon which licences were allocated by former president Bharrat Jagdeo, based on the act and the law, and whether those licences were issued on fair and impartial terms.
He noted, however, that it would be unfair to revoke the radio licences, since those companies would have already invested heavily in their business.
He noted that it is no liability of the private companies if the former president allegedly did not act in a transparent manner when issuing the radio licences, and to penalize the private entities would be wrong.
