Accused remanded for alleged arson of Georgetown dwelling house

GEORGETOWN Magistrate Fabio Azore remanded 36-year-old Philip Saul Drepaul of 55 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown to prison on Friday, after he appeared before her charged with unlawfully and maliciously setting a house on fire.

Drepaul admitted that, on April 28, at East La Penitence Squatting Area in Georgetown, he set ablaze a house belonging to Godfrey Stuart.
Police Corporal Renetta Bentham, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant and the virtual complainant (VC) are known to each other; and on Saturday, April 27, at about 16:00hrs, the VC secured his premises and left for work. Some hours later, the VC’s sister, who lives about 20 feet away, saw Drepaul setting the house afire and raised an alarm. The fire service and the police were informed, and subsequently arrested the suspect and placed him before the court.
Prosecutor Bentham objected to the accused being granted bail on grounds that he is likely to interfere with the VC, the quantum of destruction involved, and the penalty attached to the offence.
The accused was refused bail and was remanded to prison until May 28.
