LEON Duncan, 23, of Lot 1977 Willemstaad Road, Festival City, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was remanded to prison yesterday on three indictable charges.
He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with murder and robbery under arms. Particulars of one offence said, on Thursday, January 24, in the city, he murdered popular businessman Intaz Roopnarine called ‘Bobby’ and robbed him of one gold and diamond chain valued $500,000, one gold band worth $700,000 and other jewellery, all priced at a total of $2,200,000.
The accused reportedly chased the 37-year-old businessman to the back of the Cool Square Hotel in Marigold Street, West Ruimveldt, at around 05:30hrs on the morning of January 24, and then shot him dead.
Roopnarine, called ‘Bobby’, of 169 Mandela Avenue, collapsed and died near a septic tank. There was a bullet wound on the dead man’s head. The attack occurred just as Roopnarine was leaving the hotel.
Police Sergeant Seon Blackman, prosecuting, said the victim and his girlfriend visited a hotel and the accused waited there and attacked Roopnarine as they were about to leave.
Roopnarine was shot and relieved of his money and jewels, the prosecutor said.
The prisoner is also accused of two other armed robberies committed on April 22, when it is alleged that, in company with others, he robbed Shang Ling Ling of a quantity of items valued $206,000.
Duncan will return to Court on May 7.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Harris, of Lot 2499 Ozama Street, North Ruimveldt, was also refused bail and remanded by the Chief Magistrate.
The allegation against him is that, on Saturday, April 27, at Conversation Tree Road, Greater Georgetown, he robbed Mahesh Madray of $2,440,000, property of Giftland Office Max.
