Guyana and Venezuela to enhance collaboration in fighting drug trade

THE Venezuela and Guyana Governments are continuing to collaborate even after the passing of Venezuela President Hugo Chavez and the election of the country’s new President Nicholas Maduro.   This was demonstrated, yesterday, when the two South American nations inked an agreement to extend their collaboration in the fight against illegal drugs.
The Venezuelan delegation that came here, yesterday, to have bilateral discussions with the Guyana Government included Minister of Foreign Affairs Elias Jaua Milano and Minister of Food Felix Osorio.
The agreement to strengthen the fight against drugs was signed by Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and her Venezuelan counterpart Elias Jaua Milano at the International Conference Centre, Lilliendaal, Greater Georgetown.
Rodrigues-Birkett, in delivering remarks after the inking of the agreement, said that cooperation between the two countries in the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) were topics explored during the bilateral discussions.
In addition, she said the relationship between Venezuela and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was also discussed, as well as the future economic cooperation between Venezuela and Guyana. She also noted that the Venezuelan government had recommitted to the procurement of Guyana’s rice.
The minister pointed out that yesterday’s activity was the first bilateral meeting, but stressed that it will be the first of many.
“We value greatly the relationship between Guyana and Venezuela. This relationship has never been better and I think that it can only grow from strength to strength,” she emphasized.
Rodrigues-Birkettt related that she had been informed that Venezuela will be bidding to host the next Pan American Games, and such a venture will be supported by Guyana.
She also took the opportunity to reiterate Guyana’s support for the recently elected Venezuela President Nicholas Maduro.
Meanwhile, Venezuela Foreign Affairs Minister Elias Jaua Milano stated that the countries’ bilateral relationship will encompass the economic, political and social points of view.
He also expressed his satisfaction with the signing of the agreement which will see the collaboration of the two neighbouring countries in the fight against drugs, and particularly the creation of the necessary mechanisms to prevent drug addiction.
In addition, the Venezuela foreign minister lauded the decision of the Guyana Government to name the homeless shelter, which was established at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice with the support of the Venezuela Government, after the country’s late president Hugo Chavez.
