Police report four deaths in weekend road accidents

AN OUT of control Canter truck collided with a minibus on Sunday night killing the driver of the latter vehicle.
The collision took place on Foulis Public Road and the dead man is Frankie Saul, 57, of Belladrum. Several passengers in his route 50 bus that was heading in the opposite direction, were also injured.
The accident occurred about 18:30 hrs Sunday and the daughter of the deceased, Nakata Mitchell told the Guyana Chronicle, yesterday, that she learnt her father was heading to Rosignol, also on West Coast Berbice, when the head-on crash took place.
She was told that the Canter swerved and ended up in the path of the bus, causing her father to suffer severe internal injuries. He was rushed to Mahaicony Hospital, East Coast Demerara and, subsequently, transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he succumbed.
Mitchell said her father of seven was a well-known minibus driver for many years plying the Georgetown to Rosignol route.
The driver of the Canter is in Police custody assisting with investigations into the fatality.

Essequibo Coast  
In  another weekend accident that occurred about 22:00 hrs on Saturday, Mohamed Khalid, 22, of Dryshore, was riding a motorcycle along the roadway at Fairfield, with pillion rider Garbadan Whadan, 19, of Aurora, also on Essequibo Coast, when they hit a dog which ran across the road.
As a result, both men fell off the machine and suffered injuries. Whadan was transported to the GPH where he died on Sunday.
Police investigations into that occurrence are in progress.
Police also reported that about 14:15 hrs on Sunday, eight-year-old Dinesh Chand, of Brothers Village, was struck by a motor car while crossing the public road at Tain, Corentyne.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital, also in Berbice, and the driver of the car is in custody assisting with the investigations.
In yet another Sunday accident, at about 15:20 hrs, porter Mukesh Mangar, 38, of Pigeon Island, was travelling in the tray of a Canter along Hope Public Road, also on East Coast Demerara, when he fell out of the vehicle as it was negotiating a turn.
He, too, suffered injuries and was taken to the GPH where he died.
The driver of that vehicle is in custody assisting with investigations into the death.
Meanwhile, the Police Traffic Department, at Eve Leary, in Georgetown, reported, yesterday, that, for this year, 34 road accidents were recorded to have caused 37 deaths.
For the corresponding period last year, the record indicated 27 accidents with 28 deaths.
