Health and Legal Affairs Ministries to seek court ruling to overturn budget cuts for Specialty Hospital

THE Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Legal Affairs will be moving to the courts to seek a ruling overturning the decision to cut the budget for the Specialty Hospital being sited at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara.

This was disclosed by Minister of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsarran in an interview yesterday with this publication.
The joint parliamentary opposition of the Alliance for Change (AFC) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) totally cut funding for the Specialty Hospital, reducing to zero the $1.25 Billion proposed in the 2013 national budget.
The health minister stated that the Government was expecting the Opposition to cut the budget like crazy, but this will not hamper the progress and the construction of the hospital.
The Indian contracting company, Surendra Engineering Corporation Ltd submitted their proposal on April 15th, 2013 to the health minister, and the document gave a revised design of the building and land layout. A technical survey was also done on the land recently along with repairs to the fence surrounding the plot of land.
The US$18M facility is being constructed through an Indian line of credit, and when completed the hospital will provide services such as cardio, cosmetic and organ transplant surgeries. The intention is to provide any surgery for which Guyanese would now have to travel overseas, at a fraction of the cost. (Gabreila Patram)
