THE man who brutally stabbed to death his 14-year-old step-daughter at their home, on Wednesday night, was reportedly caught by residents and public spirited citizens late yesterday after he managed to elude police for several hours.

Dead is Fenella Samuels of Vreed-en-Hoop Squatting Area, called ‘Plastic City’, (a sea dam where residents reside on the government reserve), who was stabbed about 14-15 times to the body and succumbed at the West Demerara Regional Hospital (Best Hospital). The incident reportedly occurred around 20:45 hrs on Wednesday night.
Commander of Police ‘D’ Division, Christopher Griffith told the Chronicle yesterday morning that cops, up to that point in time, were combing the mangrove area near the seawall at Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, in an effort to locate the suspect.
Initial reports following the killing incident had indicated that the man stabbed his 14-year-old stepdaughter to death because she threatened to disclose that he had sexually assaulted her.
However, Griffith yesterday said the police had not received any report of sexual abuse of the girl by her 63-year-old stepfather and have since interviewed the teen’s mother, Mildred Rose.
The Assistant Commissioner stated that on Wednesday afternoon the teenager visited the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station where she filed a report of a “missing cell phone”, stating that it had been taken by a young man, with whom she is familiar.
He noted that Samuels returned home and during a heated row with her stepdad, she was attacked and fatally stabbed in her bedroom.
Griffith added that the stepfather had been imbibing heavily during the day, even shortly before the incident, and attacked his wife when she tried to fend off the knife-assault on her daughter.
The woman was injured in the left hand and received medical attention on Wednesday night and was expected to return to the WDRH for further treatment, before reporting to the police at Vreed-en-Hoop.
Rose and her nine-year-old son escaped and alerted neighbours about the man’s bloody assault. However, by the time they went to the house the teen was mortally wounded and she died minutes after being taken to the hospital.
