GDF soldier drowns after going for a swim

A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier drowned yesterday at the army’s Amphibious Training School in the Essequibo River after going for a swim.
The soldier is Kevin Calder, 27, of 27 Pilot Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice

altIn a telephone interview with Calder’s sister GDF Captain Althea Daniels–Stuart told this newspaper that she received the information from  GDF Headquarters that her brother had drowned at the GDF Amphibious Training School.
She noted that his body was flown from the Essequibo River location by the GDF helicopter to Georgetown where she was present on arrival of the body and has done a visual inspection.
She noted that she found no marks of violence to suggest that he may have died by other ways instead of drowning and the body was taken to the Lyken Funeral Home at John & Norton Street’s.
Post mortem examination is to be done as the GDF has begun investigations in the soldier’s death.
