GSCL 12/12 championship action bowls off at Everest today

THE EVEREST Cricket Club ground will be buzzing with activity today and tomorrow, when the Georgetown Softball Cricket League (GSCL) bowls off its inaugural 12/12 tournament from 10:00hrs, following a brief opening ceremony at 09:30hrs.

Twelve teams were divided into four groups at the launch of the tournament which took place at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation pavilion last Tuesday and teams playing out of groups B and C will be doing battle.
Speed Boat will oppose Recharge, with Farm XI playing the winner and loser of that contest in that order in a Group B fixture. In Group C, Universal DVD Titans will oppose Trophy Stall XI in the first encounter, with Hillfoot Vipers taking on the loser of the opening match followed by a contest against the winner.
Tomorrow’s action pits Memorex playing out of Group A against Herstelling in the opening encounter, with Smith XI taking on the loser of the first encounter, before they tackle the winner while in Group C, Bartica Challengers will oppose Regal XI in the first match, with Cotton Field Wild Oats taking on the winner and loser respectively.
At stake in the competition is $600 000 and a trophy for the winners, the losers will receive $200 000 and a trophy, the best batsman and bowler $5 000 and a trophy each while the man-of-the-series will receive a 3-piece suite, Black and Decker Oven and one Hamilton Beach juice extractor.
The semi-finals and final will be contested next Sunday at the same venue, with the winner of Group A taking on the top team from Group C in the first semifinal, while in the second semifinal Groups B and D winners will clash.
As an added attraction to the hundreds of spectators who are expected to witness the action free of cost, there will be a raffle at $100 a ticket and carries a first prize of one Daewoo double door refrigerator.
The second to fifth place prizes for the raffle, which will be drawn on the final day of the tournament, are three-piece living room suite, 32” LCD Sony Bravia television set, Royal four-burner gas stove and a G-shock mountain bicycle respectively.
Dilo Enterprise, DC Promotions, Five Star Minerals, El Dorado Trading and Ryan and Reuben Mahadeo (all out of Bartica), Star Party Rentals, Regal Stationery and Computer Supplies, Romain Car Wash, Bank of Baroda, Ravi Sarwan and Trophy Stall are some of the sponsors on board with this tournament.
