Education Ministry crafts National Policy of Admittance to nursery and primary schools

THE Ministry of Education has crafted a National Policy of Admittance to Nursery and Primary Schools to further solidify its commitment to ensuring that every boy and girl receives a good quality education.

The ministry said in a recent press release that every child of the relevant age who seeks admission is placed into nursery and primary schools respectively and in this regard the ministry has crafted a National Policy of Admittance to Nursery and Primary Schools.

This policy states that each child is entitled to a place in the school closest to the child’s home, and an appeal may be made to the Placement Officers in the case of a working parent who does not have anyone at home to take care of the child/children after school is dismissed.

Consideration may be given for the child /children to be admitted to the school closest to the workplace of the said parent, but placement at that school closest to the parent’s workplace is dependent on the space available at that school.

If no space is available at that first school closest to the parent’s workplace, then the school second closest to the parent’s workplace will be given as the next option.

According to the policy, if no space is available at the school second closest to the parent’s workplace, then the school third closest to the parent’s workplace will be given as the next option, and so on.

According to the release, parents are advised to present a job letter in the case of an appeal and a parent who is employed or works at a school will be given priority  amongst the parents who appeal a placement for the placement of his/her child/children at that school at which the said parent is employed/works.

This will be treated as though the child/children live closest to the said school at which the parent is employed/works.

Meanwhile, Guyana has achieved Millennium Development Goal Number 2 of Universal Primary Education, and this means that every child in Guyana of the relevant age has the opportunity to enter school at an appropriate age, progress through the education system and complete the full cycle.
