THE taking of evidence in the murder case of Ryan Bacchus began at the Demerara Assizes yesterday, after Justice Navindra Singh had concluded a voir dire (trial within a trial). Bacchus is indicted before a mixed jury for the unlawful killing of Lakeram Mc Kenzie called ‘Rambo’, of Section ‘C’ Enterprise, East Coast Demerara. The smaller trial was conducted to determine the admissibility of alleged oral and written confession statements.
State Counsel Renita Singh and Rhondel Weever will now call witnesses in support of the case for the prosecution.
Bacchus is accused of committing the capital offence on December 5, 2006, when police arrived at the home of the victim and found him with wounds about the body.
He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead.
A post mortem revealed that the cause of death was shock and haemorrhage due to multiple gunshot wounds.
Bacchus is being represented by Defence Counsel Ganesh Hera and the case is continuing. (George Barclay)
