AT a simple ceremony, one of Guyana’s beverage giants, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), yesterday renewed its sponsorship with the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) for three Under-16 tournaments to be hosted this year under its Gatorade and Pepsi brands.DDL and the GBA now enter the second year of partnership. In the inaugural year the company sponsored three U-16 tournaments. Two were held in Georgetown and one in Berbice.According to president of the GBA, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Steve Ninvalle, this year’s sponsorship is larger than last year’s and the GBA is very thankful for it. He said, “This partnership will go a long way because as we said earlier, the focus in 2013 is the promotion of youth and female boxing.”
“We are very heartened at the stand that DDL has taken and it shows that our pleas and cries for help have not only been heard by the corporate society but they have been answered,” Ninvalle stated.
Ninvalle’s Technical Director Terrence Poole disclosed that these tournaments have been scheduled for June 29 or 30 in Georgetown, August 15 or 16 in Berbice and December 21 or 22 possibly in Linden or West Demerara.
Ninvalle further added that the GBA is trying to decentralise boxing because persons think that Georgetown is the country. He also remarked that the discipline being displayed has been of a very high standard and the GBA will ensure that it remains that way.
There is also a possibility of a National U-16 Championship being staged where the champions from the three events meet to decide the best.
Meanwhile, DDL’s Marketing Assistant Larry Wills stated that renewing the partnership with the GBA was an easy decision based on how well the tournaments were run last year.
“DDL remains committed to sport and more so the development of youths and boxing in Guyana. We think that these events will act as a nursery for the junior boxers so they will know what is needed of them at the senior level,” Wills inputted.
DDL understands what is needed to re-hydrate athletes and that is why we have chosen Gatorade and Pepsi. The company will be providing Gatorade to the boxers to re-energise them throughout the competitions.
