GBBC FIRESTORM : AIC joins forces with GBBC for ‘Firestorm’

SURINAME-based Assuria Insurance Company (AIC) yesterday continued to broaden its corporate commitment to the sporting fraternity in Guyana, by joining forces with the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) to ensure that entity’s mega boxing card dubbed ‘Firestorm’ and set for this Saturday at Princess Hotel is a success.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of AIC, Dick Wesenhagen, handed over a sponsorship cheque to the GBBC’s president Peter Abdool at the Church Street office yesterday morning, saying how pleasurable it is for the company to be a part of the sponsorship. “It is an honour and a pleasure for Assuria to be part of the sponsorship for the exciting and unique Boxing Event of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control this Saturday, right here in Guyana.”
The management of Assuria, the newest insurance company in Guyana, has considered that GBBC always delivers highly entertaining fights with a superb level of sportsmanship, adding that the governing body has an astonishing track record of safety and security with respect to the health of the competitors in the ring.
“Assuria wishes the GBBC lots of success with this promising event that will surely spread out widely through the whole Caribbean.”
In his response, Abdool welcomed Assuria on board as the newest sponsor of boxing, before he accepted the timely and generous donation.
“It is our pleasure to have Assuria on board and wonderful to see them immediately get involved with Guyanese society, especially in sport. We look forward to a long and satisfying relationship with them and our gratitude goes out to them on this occasion.”
Saturday’s action will see former European and Commonwealth middleweight champion Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman take on Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings for the World Boxing Council/Caribbean Boxing Federation (WBC/CABOFE) welterweight belt.
Clive Atwell will go head-to-head with Venezuela’s Raphael Hernandez for the WBC/CABOFE featherweight title, Elton Dharry will take on Hewley Robertson for the national bantamweight title and Mark Austin meets Gladwin Dorway for the national junior middleweight belt.
Syria’s Mahmoud Loul and Deryck Richmond of Berbice will clash in a four-round super middleweight encounter following two amateur bouts, one of which will involve two female pugilists. Admission to the venue is VIP $10 000, ringside $5 000 and regular $2 500. Bell-time is 19:00hrs. (Calvin Roberts)
