AFTER the dust would have settled and the pretenders separated from the newly elected leader of Guyana’s football it is time to get down to the serious business of polishing the much tarnished image of a Sport which has benefited from close to a billion dollars in grants being doled out by the world governing body FIFA since 1998.
Indeed the task ahead is a huge one for the new President, Christopher Matthias and his executive in repairing the damage done to our football over two decades and culminating with the disgraceful suspension for corruption by FIFA of the then president of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and the General Secretary.
All of the presidential candidates, in their manifesto, had spoken out on the need for accountability in this new era of Guyana’s football which is now graced with a new leader after the ‘Klassique’ reign between 1989 and 2011.
The challenge to clean up the grave state of the sport is tremendous but the new boss can make a positive impact on his pledge of accountability if he endorses a call being made within the real lovers of the sport for an inquiry into the ill-management of the sport during the Klass dominance.
After he was suspended by FIFA for 26 months, Klass should have been investigated and maybe the mystery or silence surrounding the deals made for large sums of money would now be public knowledge.
It is no surprise that his successor, Frankie Wilson has been able to demit office without giving any accountability for the financial arrangement made with the Mexico and US Football Federations. Although the Nation was told that the switch in the venue for the game was done in the interest of securing much-needed finance for the GFF we are now hearing that the federation is in the red to the tune of a whooping $38M.
I am positive if the General Council of the GFF had acted swiftly and launched an investigation into Klass’ suspension, Wilson and cohorts could not have entertained the thought of just doing their own thing without being accountable for their actions. The entire 2014 World Cup campaign needs to be investigated.
There was also another secret deal brokered in Colombia, just prior to the start of the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying semi-finals round, under Wilson’s acting leadership so that too must be investigated if the claims of accountability are sincere by the new president.
This is the ideal place to start cleaning up the financial mess the GFF has built up over the years of visionless leadership and gain some respectability
It will be interesting to see how the Matthias-led Administration will go about clearing the books of being in the ‘Red’.
They have the perfect platform to let all and sundry know they mean real accountability business and more importantly reveal the true operations of the sport in the past and also to answer the big question about the ‘secret deals’.
