CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud said that in following-up the execution-style killing of city businessman, Imtiaz Rupnarine, on January 24, 2013, they have been looking for a male suspect who is now believed to be in French Guiana and they have since made contact with the law enforcement authorities there.
Rupnarine, called “Bobby”, 47, of 208 Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, was cut down by a hail of bullets when he was cornered in the backyard of Cool Square Hotel.
He was confronted by gunmen, who discharged several rounds at him, with one hitting him in the head. He collapsed to the ground and the men fled the scene after relieving the mortally wounded man of gold jewellery he was wearing.
Friends said that Rupnarine left home to socialize with some friends as is customary, and it is known how much money he had on him since he was known to be a lavish spender, and may have been trailed to the location and killed.
The well-known man was attacked and killed as he emerged from the hotel with a female friend who escaped unhurt.
The man’s wife reportedly turned up at the scene and identified the body. She is the mother of his two daughters, ages seven and two.
Rupnarine was self-employed.
