Commuters urged don’t litter aboard gov’t ferries : – RDC Region 2 counsellor

FORMER Member of Parliament, Mr. Farouk Khan, who is a standing member of the Region 2 Regional Democratic Council (RDC) is calling on commuters travelling on the two state-of-the-art government ferries between Parika and Good Hope to help maintain the cleanliness of the vessels, even as some persons are carelessly disposing of chewing gum and other litter on board. Speaking at the statutory meeting of the RDC on Tuesday at Anna Regina, Mr. Khan noted that many persons are pasting chewing gum on the chairs or throwing it on the floor of the ferries.
The former MP said these state-of-the-art ferries are provided by the government for Guyanese to travel in comfort and everyone using the vessels should ensure that they dispose of litter in the containers or bags provided, and help to maintain the cleanliness of the ferries.
The ferries are currently operating on a tidal movement system because of the large sand banks in several parts of the Essequibo River.
However, several councillors of the opposition parties APNU and AFC are calling for the river to be dredged and the ferries returned to its normal schedule. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
