TWO members of the Brazilian Naval Operations yesterday paid a courtesy call on Mayor of Georgetown Hamilton Green at City Hall, Georgetown. The two distinguished guests were Commander of Task Group CARIBEX, Jorge Jose Oe Moraes Rulff, and Operations Officer of Task Group CARIBEX, Leonard Yoshiaki Da Silva Tanaka. They were accompanied by the Deputy Chief of Mission of the Brazilian Embassy, Sabine Nadja Popoff, and Secretary/local liaison for the Brazilian Defence, Naval and Army Attache Office, Stephen Michael Monasingh.
The eminent guests brought with them the gift of a book about the Brazilian Navy for the mayor who in turn presented them with a framed photograph of City Hall.
Upon arriving at City Hall, the mayor welcomed the delegation and exchanged pleasantries with them. They were told by Green that a restoration drive is underway to restore this beautiful city which they have graced, despite the challenges being faced.
Green noted that he is very pleased by their visit and the fact that they are collaborating with the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, the naval component of the GDF.
The Brazilian Naval delegation told the mayor about their journey by ship to Guyana, noting that they had travelled through the Pacific Ocean and then to the Atlantic before docking in Guyana.
Despite not being able to speak English, the men managed to express their delight at the welcome they received from the mayor and the staff of City Hall. The Brazilian Navy is the naval service branch of the Brazilian Armed Forces, responsible for conducting naval operations. It is the largest navy in South America and the second largest navy in the Americas, after the United States Navy.
