MS. RENITA LOLITA WILLIAMS yesterday took the oath of office and was sworn in as A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU’S) newest Member of Parliament, following the resignation of Richard Allen from his post in the Assembly.
Williams, who hails from Morucca in Region 1 (Barima/Waini) now replaces Allen as the party’s Region 1 representative.
Speaker of the National Assembly, Raphael Trotman, advised that the Chief Elections Officer, Mr. Calvin Benn, had indicated by a letter that Williams was being appointed as a duly elected as a member of the National Assembly.
Trotman was the first of many well wishers to welcome and congratulate the new member, adding that she has come to the tenth Parliament at a very interesting and poignant moment.
Leader of the APNU, David Granger, also offered his congratulations to Williams, noting that although the circumstances of her entry were extraordinary, his party is confident that because of her commitment and her service in the region, she will be able to discharge her duties at this time.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC) Khemraj Ramjattan also rose to offer his best wishes to Willams.
“In the context of what transpired with Mr. Richard Allen, and the context of the very difficult circumstances that we are all in at this present moment, I wish her well.”
Prime Minister Samuel Hinds joined the well wishers in offering welcome and congratulations on behalf of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) and also extended best wishes to the ailing Allen for a speedy recovery.
“Ms. Williams, you have joined the parliament at an intriguing time of our budget debate when we’ve come from seven consecutive years of growth and development and your region too. Region 1 has been leading the way in the developments we’ve seen. I welcome you to continue to take part in this continuing growth and development in our country,” he asserted.
