Guyana in sight of first Regional 4-Day win this season … CCC need 126 more with 4 wickets in hand

HOST Guyana were large and in charge at the end of the penultimate day of their sixth round West Indies Cricket Board Regional 4-Day fixture against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) which is being played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.

altHaving enjoyed a first-innings lead of 64 runs, Guyana resumed their second innings yesterday on 44 for 1 and were bowled out for 175 for an overall lead of 239 runs on a wicket that was keeping low at times.
Only Steven Jacobs 45 (57 balls, 113 mins, 2×4), Leon Johnson 37 (60 balls 5×4, 1×6, 68 mins) and Assad Fudadin 27 (70 balls 3×4 97 mins) offered resistance to the Caribbean students’ bowling which was led by Akeem Dewar, Ryan Austin and Nekoli Parris who took three wickets each for 21, 50 and 55 runs respectively.
Asked to score 240 to record a come-from-behind victory, CCC stumbled to 31 for 3 at tea, before ending the day on 114 for 6, against the bowling of Ronsford Beaton who has so far taken 2 for 18, needing 126 more runs to record an unlikely victory today.
Scores to date; Guyana 231 and 175; CCC 167 and 114 for 6.
Guyana resumed their second innings yesterday, with Fudadin and Johnson on 16 and 26 respectively and progressed to 74 before they lost both overnight batsmen along with a cautious Narsingh Deonarine (7) within the first hour of play.
They raised the 100 off 32.2 overs, when Ramnaresh Sarwan turned a delivery from Ryan Austin to short backward squareleg, as he consolidated Guyana’s innings in partnership with a confident Jacobs.
However, at 110 for 4, Sarwan was caught at midwicket by Parris for 13 off Austin, as his poor form for Guyana continued this season. Guyana were 136 for 5 at lunch, with Jacobs 35 and Anthony Bramble 7,
After lunch, Guyana posted the 150 from 53.3 overs with Jacobs 41 and Bramble 13, before they lost both batsmen in the space of seven deliveries, with the former hitting a delivery back to Dewar while Bramble picked out Kyle Corbin at leg slip off Austin.
Even though a brief shower interrupted play for seven minutes after lunch, it did not stop CCC from routing the home team in their second innings, as they removed Devendra Bishoo (3), Paul Wintz (0) and Veerasammy Permaul 14 (1×6) 66 minutes after the break, with Beaton yet to score.
CCC took the tea break at 31 for 3, having lost Shacaya Thomas (13) who drove the first delivery of their second innings, a no-ball from Beaton for four and Anthony Alleyne and Nekoli Parris who both made 1.
After tea, Corbin drove Wintz through extra cover with disdain for four. Floyd Reifer also on-drove Wintz to long on for four, after surviving a run-out appeal from the home team, who claimed he ran in the path of Bramble’s throw to the non-striker’s end.
Guyana removed Floyd Reifer in the following over, when he was caught by Sarwan at slip off Bishoo for 18 (47b, 3×4), only after umpire Nigel Duguid consulted with his colleague Peter Nero at squareleg and decided the catch was cleanly taken, leaving CCC on 64 for 4.
A short rising delivery from Beaton touched the gloves of Corbin on its way to Bramble, sending the CCC skipper back into the pavilion for a resilient 35 (88b, 103mins 3×4), followed by Walton who was lbw to Permaul for 12 leaving CCC on 114 for 6.
At the close of play, they reached 114 without further loss, with Raymon Reifer on 22 and Dewar yet to score, looking to come back today and defy the home team’s bowlers, who will be looking to chalk up their first victory for their team this season, following three consecutive losses.
