THE DEFENDING Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Schools Championship team, Linden Technical Institute (LTI), suffered a humiliating 4-0 defeat at the hands of Harmony Secondary, when this year’s version of the tournament and the fifth of its kind got under way last Tuesday afternoon.
On the same day, home team Wisburg failed to take the field against Mackenzie High School (MHS) in what should have been the opening game of the tournament.
Following the March Past of the eight participating schools in this championship, Wisburg Secondary failed to be match-ready after their gear were reportedly locked up in the school and could not be available for the game.
LTI then faced off with Harmony in the lone encounter of the day with the victors being led by a solid all-round performance and the brilliance of striker Kurt Johnson who got a hat-trick and the other scored by Godfrey Green along with superb goal-keeping by Norbert Sanculotte.
As early as the 3rd minute, Johnson found the back of the net when he scored and by halftime the scores read Harmony 2-0 in the lead.
The second half saw Harmony continue their dominance as the LTI goalkeeper Kevin Anthony could not withstand the pressure and the scores read 3-0 after Johnson got his third goal in the 40th minute, while Green polished off things for the opening win with his 67th minute strike.
The afternoon also saw some brilliant custodial work from Sansculotte who brought off a brilliant save in the closing stages of the game when one shot from outside the 18-yard box zoomed towards his uprights, forcing him to deflect the ball out.
The participating schools are LTI, Harmony, MHS, Linden Foundation Secondary, New Silvercity Secondary, Marcia Craig Educational Institute, Wisburg Secondary and Wismar/Christianburg Secondary.
This tournament will be played on a preliminary round-robin basis which will end on May 9 and will see the top four schools advance to the semifinals which will be played on May 14 and May 16, while the final is set for May 23.
Yesterday two more matches were set for the Wisburg Secondary School ground with the first game at 14:00hrs seeing Linden Foundation Secondary take on Wismar Christianburg Secondary and the second at 16:00hrs between Marcia Craig Educational Institute and New Silvercity Secondary.
Trophies and replicas for the winners and runners-up along with several individual prizes which will be on offer in the championship.
