QUARTERFINAL action in this year’s 20th annual Mayor’s Cup knockout football competition will kick off this evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground, with two exciting and enthralling matches set to whet the appetite of football lovers. The GFC team will be in action in the first encounter, taking on national club champions and Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League points leader Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United at 1830hrs, followed by the Sunburst Camptown versus Slingerz clash two hours later.
GFC’s path to the quarterfinals was not an easy one, as they were forced to overcome two GFF Super League teams in BK Western Tigers whom they defeated 2-1, thanks to Teashawn Blackman’s brace, and BV/Triumph United 1-0 in the previous encounter, with Teashawn Hicks being their goalscorer.
Tonight, GFC will be looking to both Blackman and Hicks, along with Dexter Rutherford, Gregory Denny and Delon Cadogan, if they wish to get past this Alpha unit who gained a walkover from Uitvlugt in their first encounter and will look to Richard Reynolds, Anthony Abrams, Andrew Murray, Dwight Peters and their two former Pele players in Travis ‘Zorro’ Grant and Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, to advance.
The second encounter on tonight’s double-header kicks off at 2030hrs with the new kids on the block, Slingerz, fresh from their Mashramani Extravaganza win on the West Side, facing a seasoned but new-look Sunburst Camptown.
When one looks at the Gordon Brathwaite-coached Slingerz lineup, they would see such players as Dwayne Jacobs, Ronson Williams, Joshua Browne, Anthony Harding and Tishawn Joseph, five quality players in their own rights and for whom not much needs to be said.
But for the Campbellville-based and Rishawn Sandiford-led Sunburst Camptown lineup, who struggled in their 2-1 victory over a game Golden Grove lineup, players of the calibre of Lennox Charles, Telson McKinnon, Joel Bond, Travis Martin and Devon Forde would have to walk with their ‘A’ game to get past the West Side-based lineup.
The other two quarterfinal matches in the tournament which have a magnificent G$1M up for grabs to the winner, with the second-, third- and fourth-placed finishers receiving $500 000, $300 000 and $200 000 respectively, will be contested on Thursday at the same venue.
At 1830hrs, Santos will do battle with Den Amstel while from 2030hrs Fruta Conquerors and Guyana Defence Force will engage each other, with the winners being guaranteed a place in the semifinals which will be played on a date to be announced.
